Why are we called Buttermilk? (we get that one a lot)

When Mitra Raman left her home in Seattle to attend college in Pittsburgh, she immersed herself in all that her school had to offer, whether she was leading the CMU Bhangra team or attending Greek events with her sorority. Although surrounded by familiar faces and places, she would still find herself searching for the comforts of her home.

Growing up, her mom would make rasam, a traditional South Indian spicy tomato soup, and she always mixed it with rice and a splash of buttermilk. In efforts to enjoy this household staple while away, Mitra searched nearby Indian restaurants but came up short as they mostly served unhealthy (and untasty) meals or food from other regions.

Upon hearing this, Mitra’s mother gave her all the ingredients for rasam in one bag and before sending her daughter back to school, she said the magic words: “just add water”. And so, adding the ingredients to a pot of boiling water, Mitra was finally able to enjoy rasam in her new home.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Mitra realized she couldn’t be the only person craving homemade food especially when the options available were carb-filled student dining halls and out-of-budget restaurants. But if something as complicated and traditional as rasam could be packed in a bag, the opportunities were endless for other authentic meals.

And that’s how The Buttermilk Co. was born. Health-conscious and vegan Indian recipes carefully-curated and shipped to your door. “Just add water.” A college-kid’s dream and a busy adult’s timesaver.
